Yesterday, I hosted eight girl scouts who are participating in our YWIH patch barbershop workshop on April 25. We went over a couple of the required elements to earn the patch and spent some time learning Hey Soul Sister, a song a cappella Joy chose specifically for the girls to sing with us that day and then again at our upcoming show in September.

Some of these girls had prior exposure to our art form, having attended a show we held in 2013. Those lucky girls even got to sing tags with Maxx Factor after that show. Those girls who hadn’t been there, though, were quickly taken in and very excited about the music and learning about harmony.

At one point, we played videos of choruses and quartets, and during one such video, one girl was surprised to hear the low notes of the bass. “Is someone really singing that?” Yes, I told her, that’s the bass.

It was so much fun introducing these 5th and 6th graders to 4-part a cappella harmony. They were so enthusiastic and didn’t want to stop singing even as their parents came to pick them up. While most opted to sing Lead, a couple chose harmony parts and stuck it out. What a great day! I am so excited to see what April 25th brings!
